If you work with or live with an adolescent, you know how challenging they can be.  This interactive, hands-on workshop will introduce you to research on how the teen brain works, how it is built, and how it is different from the adult or child brain.  Discover the role of hormones in boys and girls, and the key roles that stress and sleep have on teen learning.  Learn why teens are especially vulnerable to high risk behaviors and the 6 techniques for helping teens avoid them.  Discover the 5 most important relationship characteristics that are predictive of happiness and identify specific practices for nurturing them in your classroom, library or home.  You will come away with specific ideas on how to protect and strengthen the teenage brain.

Frank Kros, MSW, JD, is a career child advocate who has served as a childcare worker, child abuse investigator, children’s home administrator, consultant, college professor, attorney, writer and speaker.  Mr. Kros is president of The Upside Down Organization and executive vice president of The Children’s Guild, one of the largest private providers of special education services in Maryland.

Intended audience:  Teachers, counselors, parents, administrators, librarians, social workers & adolescent advocates.  Lunch is on your own.

This workshop is brought to you through a partnership of the Central Texas Library System, Austin ISD Library Services and Austin Public Library, and is funded by the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and the Institute for Library and Museum Services.
